The Four Peaks Wilderness Area is one of our favorite areas in the Phoenix area, as it offers dramatic desert scenery, towering saguaro cactus forests, rugged off-road trails, and quiet hiking routes that showcase the raw beauty of Arizona’s Sonoran Desert.

Where is the Four Peaks Wilderness Area?

The Four Peaks Wilderness Area sits within the Tonto National Forest and covers more than 60,000 acres of protected land. It’s named after the dramatic four-summit mountain ridge that dominates the skyline when viewed from the Phoenix metro area.

Located east of Phoenix and north of Roosevelt Lake, the Four Peaks Wilderness is one of the most scenic yet often overlooked outdoor destinations in central Arizona. With sweeping mountain views, iconic desert landscapes, and miles of remote terrain, it’s a perfect destination for hikers, photographers, and ATV and off-road enthusiasts.

Stretching across more than 60,000 acres, this vast desert landscape offers an incredible sense of scale and solitude.

The Raw Palette of the High Desert

There is a rugged, intentional beauty to the desert that feels less like a landscape and more like a carefully curated rock garden. Beneath the wide-open sky, the ground is a mosaic of colorful stones that provide a vibrant backdrop for the resilient desert flora.

During a recent trip to this area on a warm spring day, Teresa captured this great video that provides a glimpse of this amazing place.

The iconic saguaro stands tall amidst this natural architecture, framing views of distant mountain ranges that change character with every shift in light. It is a land of dramatic contrasts, where the warmth of the unfiltered sunshine can, in an instant, give way to the electric energy of an approaching storm.
