A Living Journey Through Time

One of our favorite passions is photographing history—ghost towns, cowboys, and everything rusty and timeworn. When we think about the roots of the American West, steam locomotives rise to the top of the list. Few machines symbolize the grit and grandeur of that era like a steam engine in motion. And there’s no better way to experience that than hopping aboard the Grand Canyon Railway on one of their celebrated Steam Saturdays.

A Journey Through Time with #4960

For train enthusiasts, history buffs, and lovers of the great outdoors, Steam Saturday is nothing short of magical. On select Saturdays throughout the year, the Grand Canyon Railway brings history roaring back to life by firing up its legendary steam locomotive #4960—a 2-8-2 "Mikado" type engine built in 1923. This beautifully restored locomotive runs from Williams, Arizona, to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon, offering passengers a rare opportunity to experience early 20th-century rail travel through the breathtaking landscapes of northern Arizona.

Originally built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works for the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad, #4960 is a survivor of a golden age. Today, thanks to dedicated preservation efforts, it operates not only in pristine mechanical condition but also with an eye on sustainability, running on waste vegetable oil instead of coal or diesel. This makes #4960 one of the most environmentally friendly steam locomotives in the world.

More Than a Ride—It’s a Moving Experience

Watching #4960 in action is an unforgettable sight. Billowing steam, the rhythmic chuff of the pistons, and the gleam of polished brass pull you straight into another era. The train winds its way from the pine-scented forests around Williams to the high desert plateaus that usher you toward the Grand Canyon, all while offering spectacular views and a one-of-a-kind atmosphere.

And for photographers? It’s paradise. There are countless moments to capture—from the power and elegance of the locomotive itself to the dramatic scenery and historic passenger cars that it hauls along the way.

A Star After Dark: The Grand Canyon Rail Yard

While the daytime ride is a star attraction, the nighttime rail yard in Williams, Arizona, is a hidden gem. Across the street from the depot, the Grand Canyon Railway rail yard takes on a dreamlike quality after dark. Mercury vapor lights cast a silvery glow over the historic train cars, creating a cinematic backdrop of shadows, reflections, and timeless charm.

One standout in this nighttime gallery is The Chief, the line’s premier parlor car. Its stainless steel body and observation platform make it a favorite subject for long-exposure shots under the stars.

The Storied Past of The Chief

The Chief has a journey of its own. Built in 1947 for service along the Atlantic Coast between New York and Miami, the car saw several decades of transformation. After its retirement in the early 1980s, it spent time in Texas and even operated as a dinner car in Mexico—until it was seized by the Mexican government during a legal dispute.

Eventually returned to the U.S. in 1994, the car endured further misadventures, including being lost en route and damaged in a collision. Its final rescue came when the Grand Canyon Railway purchased and restored it, finally putting it into service in 2002. Today, it serves as both a luxurious ride and a living piece of railroading history.

Experience the Magic for Yourself

Steam Saturday isn’t a daily event, so if you want to experience it, plan ahead. Dates are posted on the Grand Canyon Railway’s official website, and tickets often sell out well in advance. Whether you're a devoted railfan or simply someone who loves immersive, history-rich experiences, this is one trip you won’t soon forget.

Final Thoughts

There’s something almost spiritual about steam locomotives. Their raw power, mechanical rhythm, and clouds of swirling steam evoke a sense of wonder that few modern machines can match. The Grand Canyon Railway’s Steam Saturday featuring #4960 captures all of that—and adds the natural beauty of Arizona’s high country to the mix.

So whether you’re aiming your camera at a glowing rail yard under the stars or savoring the echo of the whistle through pine trees during the day, Steam Saturday is more than a photo op—it’s a celebration of history in motion. Don’t miss your chance to step aboard.
