Healing Through Organic Gardening: Natural Weed Control and Earth-Friendly Tips

For so many years, I have had an organic garden. Avoiding toxins has led to my healing in numerous ways, and I am committed to doing what is best for our Earth.

It took time to experiment with different solutions; I now find organic gardening both simple and deeply rewarding.

The Truth About Salt: Why It's Worse Than You Think for Weed Control

I used to use a recipe to kill weeds until several people on Facebook told me that the recipe I was using, which included salt, was harmful to our environment. Salt is worse for your garden than Round-Up. Salt is natural, so no chemicals are used, but it is detrimental to plants, cement, and many other things. Here is the science behind why salt is a bad idea: https://laidbackgardener.blog/.../garden-myth-salt-makes.../

Learning Through Experience: Wisdom From Others

Many people have offered me their advice on organic gardening, which has been extremely helpful.

Talitha told me, "Weeds can be naturally removed by improving the soil health so much that they no longer thrive. It's not a quick solution, but it's the most biologically and ecologically sound way to improve soil health. 3-6" of mulch prevents weeds and provides added nutrients to the soil as it breaks down. You receive mulch for free from GetChipDrop." I checked this out - GetChipDrop is available in so many places.

Stew told me: "The weed n feed needs to be sprayed after an application so it gets into the soil. The Preen needs to be applied when the lawn is wet. That way, it sticks to plants better. Our landscaper told us that his property is little more than weeds this year." Chemicals clearly are not better than natural treatments in so many ways.

Linda told me, "I remove 'weeds' by hand, as I don't want to harm ants or other underground beings."

Our Favorite Organic Products for a Thriving Garden

We use this product to fertilize our garden and to prevent weeds! It works so well. You need to water it in. Quail love to eat it; they kick the rocks in our yard to reach it. The rocks end up on our cement - this is prevented by extra watering along walkways and patios. We use this in our entire garden, and we have very few weeds. Since we live in Arizona, we don't have grass; we have rocks. We use it in the spring and fall. It is fantastic, and I love that it prevents weeds, is a fertilizer, and is so healthy that quail and doves can eat it! It says it is organic. I called the company about this. It is not organic; they mean it is not a chemical. They assured me that it was GMO-free. You can find it on Amazon or their website under this heading: Organic Corn Gluten Fertilizer - GMO-Free, All-Natural Lawn Care for Healthy Grass.

How a Simple Weed Hoe Was Easier for Us and Gentler on the Earth

When we mistimed our pre-emergent application and ended up with too many weeds, Keith went and bought a weed hoe at Ace Hardware. He says it is easier than spraying them and much faster than kneeling and pulling each weed. It will disturb the small underground beings, but less than salt! I love learning from other people!

To provide our plants with even more nutrition, we also use Down To Earth All Natural Fertilizers, which are also available on Amazon. This combination has made our garden flourish!

Organic Gardening Becomes a Way of Life

I love that organic gardening helps us avoid harmful toxins and promotes healing, and we avoid tracking all those chemicals into our home. It's so fulfilling to cultivate a thriving, Earth-friendly garden!
