A Springtime Encounter with Wild Beauty
When most people hear the name “Joshua Tree,” their minds instantly jump to the famous Joshua Tree National Park in Southern California. With its iconic twisted trees and desert landscape, it’s no wonder the area draws visitors from around the world. But what many don’t realize is that Arizona, too, is home to several beautiful Joshua Tree forests. One of these hidden gems lies tucked between Wickenburg and Wikieup along US Route 93—also known as the Joshua Forest Scenic Road.

On a clear and pleasant spring day, we set off to explore this lesser-known treasure. Our plan was simple: enjoy the drive, soak in the desert landscapes, and, with any luck, capture a few compelling photographs in the golden light of late afternoon. We had no idea that this adventure would lead to an unexpected and magical encounter—one that would become the highlight of our trip.
Joshua Forest Scenic Road, Arizona
As we made our way north along US 93, the scenery began to shift. The Sonoran Desert gave way to the Mojave, and we found ourselves in the only region where Joshua Trees and Saguaro cacti coexist. It’s a rare and stunning convergence of two desert ecosystems, and it creates a dramatic visual contrast—one that’s particularly beautiful when bathed in the warm hues of the setting sun.
We found a good place to stop and began setting up our gear. The late-day light painted the desert with a soft, golden glow. The mountains in the distance added depth to the scene, and we were excited to begin shooting.
A Surprise from the Forest
Just as we were settling into the rhythm of photographing the landscape, something unexpected happened. Emerging quietly from the forest came a single horse—a striking Sorrel with a gleaming copper coat. She moved with quiet grace and paused near a patch of desert flowers, as if she had stepped into the frame just for us.

We held our breath and began photographing her, awestruck by the moment. The Sorrel stood framed by Joshua Trees, her presence adding life and spirit to the desert around her. It felt like a scene out of a dream.
Moments later, another horse appeared—this one a rich Bay with a sleek, dark coat. The Sorrel and the Bay stood side by side, posing almost naturally as we snapped our photos.

The chemistry between them suggested a bond, and they moved together as though they were longtime companions.
The Midnight Beauty
Just when we thought the moment couldn’t get any more magical, a third horse emerged from the forest’s edge. This one was breathtaking—an all-black horse with a proud stance and eyes full of curiosity. We named her Midnight.

Teresa managed to capture her at just the right moment, as she stepped out from the trees and into the fading light. The contrast of her dark coat against the vibrant landscape was stunning. It was as though the desert had revealed one final gift before the sun disappeared behind the hills.
All three horses approached us with gentle curiosity. They trotted over to the fence, perhaps wondering if we had treats or simply what we were up to. Though we had no snacks to offer, we were grateful for the gift of their company. For a few short minutes, we shared the desert with them. Then, just as quietly as they had come, they slipped back into the forest, disappearing among the trees as the sky deepened into twilight.
Mystery and Magic in the Desert
We’ve since wondered where these horses came from. There are a few ranches in the area, but none nearby. They wore no halters or brands, and their coats were clean and glossy, suggesting they were cared for. Whether they were free-roaming ranch horses, strays, or simply adventurers like us, we’ll probably never know. But the mystery only added to the magic of the moment.
This unexpected encounter reminded us of why we seek out wild places—to witness beauty in its most authentic form. The Joshua Forest Scenic Road offers more than just a scenic drive; it offers a portal into a landscape that feels timeless and untamed. And sometimes, if you’re lucky, it shares a secret or two.
Capturing the Spirit of the Southwest
As photographers and lovers of the natural world, we always aim to capture the essence of a place, not just what it looks like, but what it feels like. The combination of rugged desert terrain, unique vegetation, and unplanned wildlife moments gave us exactly that on this trip.
From the sunlit Joshua Trees to the gentle eyes of Midnight, every detail told a story we were honored to witness.
If you’re ever traveling through Arizona and find yourself on US 93 between Wickenburg and Wikieup, take a little extra time to slow down, pull over, and soak it all in. Whether you’re a photographer, a hiker, or just someone looking for a bit of peace in a busy world, the Joshua Forest Scenic Road has something to offer.
And who knows? Maybe you’ll find your own moment of magic among the trees.
