The Harm to You That Fragrances Cause

The day of our trip and for several days afterward, I was so exhausted that I spent most of my time sleeping and felt awful.
When I had this exhaustion, I couldn't even sleep in bed because I'd wake up coughing so violently and feeling so ill. We had to wash our sheets four times before I could finally sleep well.
Keith and I went together to pick up our truck. My left sinus got blocked again, my eye was watering, and the intense exhaustion I've been having came back. Then I followed him in our car back home, and all the symptoms and exhaustion went away. Now it was so clear that the issue was Keith's clothes, not mine. Keith goes out each week with friends who use fragrances, and we realized this was the issue.
Keith washed all his clothes with Dr. Bronner's Baby Soap and then washed them with organic white vinegar. He did this process twice, which meant that each piece of his clothing had been washed four times. Now, at times, when we had breakfast or I sat next to him, I'd begin to cough intensely, and he'd have to leave and take his clothes off in the garage. Then he'd put on another set of clothes. We are finding that some clothes are more contaminated and need more cleaning.
I was surprised to have these reactions so suddenly. Clearly, the toxins became too great for my body to tolerate. I never suspected this was an issue because I would feel fine when Keith got home, fine after I went out.
Keith has worn these clothes for years. This sudden problem arose from changing our process of washing clothing worn outside our home with only vinegar instead of Dr. Bronner's Baby Soap. Dr. Bronner's is fantastic at removing toxins. Vinegar is excellent at cleaning clothes. We are going to use only Dr. Bronner's now, and we think this will finally remove the toxins in Keith's clothes.
Our truck is back from the repair shop. We are worried that our truck may be contaminated from the mechanic. For 48 hours, we did a hot box. We have it outside with all the windows closed in our very hot Arizona sun. Today, we have the windows open to air out our truck. Keith ordered new filters to put in our truck. Then we will run the air conditioner, and we are hopeful this will solve any issues.
We have a VOC meter that we love! This is the name on Amazon: Airthings 2960 View Plus - Battery Powered

We are testing it out. I will write more about it when we have worked out all the details.
We have been using it to test things that I needed to buy, but I was afraid I'd react to, such as shoes. We have found that VOCs higher than 250 give me asthma. I found some shoes with VOCs lower than 250! However, it can cause stress, as the VOCs were 1,500 in Keith's office yesterday; they had gone higher after he changed clothes.
After Keith changed clothes again and had a shower, he moved our VOC meter from his office into my office. I was feeling incredibly good, so this was a way to check if the meter was working. We moved to the living room. I could watch the meter on my cell phone. Even though he had changed clothes, taken a shower, and washed his hair, the meter would go up or down. When I began to feel sick, I'd look at the meter, and it had gone up. When I felt better, I checked the meter, and it had gone down. Our four air purifiers in our home could not keep up with the toxins. Then Keith left and changed into his bathrobe, which had not been outside our home, and I began to feel fine, and the results improved.
We reviewed the results we had obtained when testing various things. Each time it was high, Keith would look at his Day One app and find that he had been at the grocery store, with a friend, or at some other location.
These high scores were all from indirect contact with fragrances! The harm caused by toxic fragrances is clear to me, you, your family, and our Earth. These toxins are being released endlessly 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, everywhere across America.
Thirty percent of people report being irritated by scented products used by others. Ask this question on the internet: 'Are perfumes harmful to humans?' Yes! They cause skin irritations, respiratory issues, damage our endocrine system, headaches, nausea, and even cancer. Ask this same question for essential oils. I react just as severely to essential oils. These products are not safe. Every time you choose to wear fragrances, you are causing harm.

Thank you for giving a glimpse into the life of one with the double-edged-sword-superpower of exquisitely responding to toxins in our environment. I’m so sorry you have to be a guinea pig in this process which requires such an incredibly intense and demanding lifestyle. But you and your husband have persevered and created a life that is healthy for you in which you can help others as well! Sharing a little bit of what you have to go through is very educational and eye-opening to people who are not awake to this situation. It’s inspiring that with all the toxins in the world you have found a way to rise above it and create a life you love! Thank you!
